Birgeneau responds in writing to the post-3/3 negotiations

Below we are posting UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s formal response to the April 8 “dialogue” that came out of the March 3 Wheeler ledge occupation.  It goes without saying that there’s nothing of substance in the letter, save for a feeble defense of the “restructuring” of the “Student Development Centers in the Equity and Inclusion portfolio.”  He’s into “operating more effectively and efficiently to concentrate on the work of equity and inclusion that we all care so passionately about,” and above all,

Your suggestion of a “Freedom Ride” to Sacramento is very interesting and seems worth pursuing.  I would like to discuss this further with you early in the autumn.

  1. Uiversity of California Board of Regents can build a bridge to Californians by offering reassurances that spend thrift chancellors – like Birgeneau – are given a golden handshake and by choosing a new University of California Berkeley Chancellor whose record and demeanor can restore confidence in Cal. ‘s leadership.
Cal. Chancellor’s gross over spending, inept decisions: recruits (using California tax $) out of state $50,000 tuition students that displace qualified Californians; spends $3,000,000 for consultants to do his & many vice chancellors jobs (prominent East Coast university accomplishing same at 0 cost); pays ex Michigan governor $300,000 for lectures; Latino enrollment drops while out of state jumps 2010; tuition to Return on Investment (ROI) drops below top 10; NCAA places basketball program on probation
Cal. and Californians have been badly damaged by Chancellor Birgeneau. Good people are loosing their jobs. Cal’s leadership is either incompetent or culpable. Merely cutting out inefficiencies does not have the effect desired. But you never want a crisis to go to waste.

Increasing Cal’s budget is not enough; honorably retire Cal Chancellor Birgeneau ($500,000 salary)
