Laney student freed, but now facing 6 charges

On March 2 we reported that a Laney student and organizer with Queers Fighting Back had been arrested on 4 charges.  Things are worse than we initially thought; her charges now include 3 counts of battery of a police officer, 1 count of inciting a riot and damaging property, 1 count of disturbing a peaceful assembly, and 1 count of resisting arrest.  Based on conversations we’ve had with multiple eyewitnesses, we know these accusations to be utterly unfounded.  Thankfully Jesse was released on OR at her arraignment yesterday, but she still faces all of these charges.  Drop the charges immediately and unconditionally!

Below we are reposting a message from one of her comrades in QFB with an update:

I wanted to let everyone know that at Jessica Trepper’s arraignment yesterday, thanks to the great turnout of people in support, the judge decided that Jesse doesn’t pose a flight risk and could be released. Jesse was released at around 12 am yesterday. She had to deal with a lot of bullshit while in detention – the police broke her glasses while slamming her head against the wall which is why she couldn’t see anyone who showed up to her arraignment and she had to be taken to the hospital after being arrested because they thought they had broken her wrist – and is super relieved to be out. Unfortunately, all the charges are still standing: 3 counts of battery of a police officer, 1 count of inciting a riot and damaging property, 1 count of disturbing a peaceful assembly, and 1 count of resisting arrest. So, we still have a lot of work to do to get the charges dropped. But but but the great news is that we no longer have to raise bail and we will return money to everyone who already donated – thanks thanks thanks! Please let everyone who was willing to contribute know that we really really appreciate all the help and support!

We’ll keep you updated with info about her pre-trial hearing.  It’s essential that we turn out as many supporters as possible to show the DA and judge that we won’t stand for bullshit charges and the repression of student activists.  Jesse is facing very serious charges, and we need to see to it that she successfully fights them off.  Hands off student protesters!
